SISTRUM She-ka-res
Pronounced: "SIS-trum SHAY-kah-rays"

"Sistrum" is a sacred wooden percussion instrument which is made of a wooden or metal frame fitted with loose strips of metal and disks that jingle when moved; similar to the shekere. The noise that resounds when moved is thought to attract the attention of the gods and remove all negative energy in the before a ceremony or environment. "Sistrums" were usually carried by women of high rank in Kemet. To the sides are pictures of sistrums.
"She" is a pool of water. In Ancient Kemet bodies of water were portrayed by equally spaced vertical waves lines; similar to the strings on shekeres. Water is the primeval matter from which all creation began.

"Ka" is usually translated as "soul" or "spirit". The"Ka" comes into existence when an individual is born. It was thought that when someone died they "met their Ka".
